In
this semester I have done (School Experience Program) SEP at SMAN 12 Jakarta. I
had an opportunity to teach three times in X science class. This school
currently using the 2013 curriculum. Friday, 28th February, 2014 I
taught in X 2 science class where there were 36 students. The material that I
taught was about statistics and it is focus on group data. That was my first
experience teaching very noisy students. I had taught the students within 3 x
45 minutes I thought it was very tough matter for me. As usual before teaching
I prepared a lesson plan, teaching materials, and a booklet of evaluation sheet
to check students’ understanding. After I finished the preparation, I need to
consult it to my mentor teacher. There were a lot of suggestion and comment
from her. She was point out the main activity and classroom management. After
long consultation, I decided to use lecturing method with consideration on an
extremely tough learning material. Moreover, the students were very crowd so I
could not have any flexibility to teach effectively. Personally I think
teaching mathematics should avoid the concepts’ error in presenting the
material because it may bring a lot of disadvantage. Therefore I learn a lot in
order to teach the students effectively.
I
entered the classroom at 4-6 sessions, where it was the last session within
that session it was skipped for break time about 5 minutes. When I entered the
classroom the condition was conducive, although there were few students who
seemed tired and sleepy. Before I started the lesson activities I introduced
myself first. Since nowadays students are very fond on social media hence after
I introduced myself I took a few minutes to have chat about social media. It had
turn out beyond my expectations because they very interested talked about
it. That kind of activity, I designed as
ice breaking, in my opinion in doing ice breaking is not always with involving
students’ movements. During the learning process all activities were run
smoothly because the students were very cooperative (they want to be active in
learning and stay focus on the lesson). At first I thought with very tough
material in a short time learning the students would have a hard time and some
materials might not be covered. However, it was the opposite of my thought
because all of the material was conveyed properly and the students were doing
well. I also still had an opportunity to do an evaluation to check students’
understanding and have a brief reflection about the lesson.
The
evaluation sheets that I gave to the students were a matter for the students
because they need to finish the task and doing a correction. From that
evaluation activity the score will be graded. After correcting students' work,
I was very happy because almost all of the students were able to work on the
problems that given, and it is proven by students score where most of the
students were get 100 point. I think the students' work is a benchmark on
measuring how success I am in delivering the lesson. During the explanation
tried to use the simple phrase and the sample questions that given were authentic and meet with the students’ real
life context. Therefore I hope the
students will be more motivated to follow my lesson. Time management in
teaching was also a thing that must be considered in this SEP I required to use
one meeting to deliver one chapter of course this is not an easy matter
because personally, I thought the
material supposed not to be delivered in one meeting. However, fortunately at
this time I can manage time well so the chapter can covered. It was proven by
from all the activity on the lesson plan was going in line with my expectation.
I
think teaching a real class is different when I did microteaching. Not all
teaching methods could be applied in a real classroom, moreover the demands of
the curriculum requires teachers to use lecturing and discussion method to
deliver the material. However, due to the condition of classrooms that are not
in big size hence group discussion is appropriate to be applied. I have learned a lot of things during my
SEP. In case as a teacher I need to
prepare various plans, if the first plan cannot run properly there is a backup
plan. Besides that, the range age between the students and I was not far so I
could know what they interest in.
Therefore I could design a simple approach using topic that they like
which is about things that exist around them. As for my weakness, I was too
fast in delivering the material also sometimes I forgot that not all of my
students have the same competence. In that cases there were some students could
understand the material easily and some of them are having a hard time to
understand the material. Maybe for my next teaching I need to explain slowly hence
the students are not confused or puzzled.
