sixth semester (School Experience Program)

In this semester I have done (School Experience Program) SEP at SMAN 12 Jakarta. I had an opportunity to teach three times in X science class. This school currently using the 2013 curriculum. Friday, 28th February, 2014 I taught in X 2 science class where there were 36 students. The material that I taught was about statistics and it is focus on group data. That was my first experience teaching very noisy students. I had taught the students within 3 x 45 minutes I thought it was very tough matter for me. As usual before teaching I prepared a lesson plan, teaching materials, and a booklet of evaluation sheet to check students’ understanding. After I finished the preparation, I need to consult it to my mentor teacher. There were a lot of suggestion and comment from her. She was point out the main activity and classroom management. After long consultation, I decided to use lecturing method with consideration on an extremely tough learning material. Moreover, the students were very crowd so I could not have any flexibility to teach effectively. Personally I think teaching mathematics should avoid the concepts’ error in presenting the material because it may bring a lot of disadvantage. Therefore I learn a lot in order to teach the students effectively.

The Importance of “Explaining Skills” for a Mathematics Teacher

According to JJ Hasibuan and Moedjiono Explaining is systematically present information orally with the aim of showing the relationship. Emphasis is explaining the reasoning process of students, and not indoctrination. Explaining the material for a math teacher in which the teachers, is currently presenting information orally and in writing mathematics systematically to students with goals and objectives that the students know and understand the material being studied. The explaining skill is very important for teacher, especially for math teachers because what the teachers say (in explaining) students’ understanding. Moreover mathematics is an abstract subject claimed by most students, so it needed a good explanation and the right to be able to transform it into something concrete mathematical. Demonstrated mastery of explaining skills that teachers will enable students have a solid understanding of the problems described, and the increased involvement of students in learning activities. The purpose explaining mathematics for a teacher is to help students to understand: the first is formula and principles of mathematics itself, the second involves the students to think, and the third to get feedback on students, and the fourth is to guide students in learning to solve problem.
